Quote of the week: "I will not allow my life's light to be determined by the darkness around me."—Sojourner Truth
It's February. 2–3–23. Jordan's Day! Salute! Let me let you in on the real though, LeBron's the G.O.A.T.! Ha! So, today, I wanted to discuss my art before I dove into the politics of Cambridge Springs. I was going to talk about what inspired me to do "October Rain" and THEN I was going to address the "relationships" between inmates and staff. Smh. Black History month just started and already we dealing with the bullshit.
(Sigh) The school building and housing units have always been decorated with art for every holiday of every month. There has been bulletin board deco competitions; Christmas, St. Patrick's Day, etc.., since the day SCI-CBS became a prison. Today, the women in the school building and E unit were told to take down the decorations for Black History month because the Red, Black, and Green colors of the African Flag, ( with Martin Luther King and an excerpt from a speech ) "looked like 'gang' colors, 'Black Pantherish', and might be 'offensive' to some people."
What?!? What people? The insurrectionists? The African Flag has gang affiliations now!? Wtf? Racism is so normal here and there is no accountability in prisons. We try to hold cops accountable, why not corrections officers and/or the whole D.O.C.?
Corrections officers get away with more shit than street cops. Let's talk about it. Drugs, assaults, white supremacy, sexual misconduct; MURDER. Its hard to get convictions when its a family owned business and the only ppl needing help are the "criminals." The PADOC is corrupt and full of nepotism.
The creed for Pennsylvania's Department of Corrections is suppose to be: Care, Custody, & Control. The officers motto is: Cash, Custody and Control. They say it loud and proud. Just to let us know that our health and well-being is last on their list of racist things to do on the job. Now, there is a small amount of fair and impartial white officers. It's just not enough to make a difference. Officers who speak up, get ostracized. They all gang up on them and do shit to try to get them fired. They call them, "inmate lovers" or "hug a thugs," all because they don't subscribe to their racist ideology. Or dare I say: Trump-isms.
EVERYTHING is politicized here. And it has all been brought to you with immunity by your local Superintendent.
"Oh, your cable channel's out? It's because its a liberal station." "Oh, you want medical care? Not with our tax dollars!" "The president of our union is the 2nd coming of Trump." These are just a few of the euphemisms we hear everyday.
We have only 12 staff members of color here. 11 Black and 1 Hispanic. Sadly, its only about 5 who care, 2 don't think they have color, 1 who was just hired, ( out of 15 new officers only one was black )and the rest walk around like they don't see or hear a thing. Since I've been at SCI-CBS there has been so many African Americans who left to work at different facilities, got fired, or flat out quit.
So for my last lines ( I'm running out of time so I will broach the subject at a later date ) I would like to thank: Ms. Walters, Ms. Bivins, Mr. Thomas, Ms. Phillips, Ms. Ford, Ms. Cleckley, Ms. Cedeño, Mr. Cooley, Mr. Adams, Mr. McMillian, Ms. Sullivan, and last but, never least, Ms. Johnson for their service. They are all staff of color who has left in the last 5 years due to the culture of hate that this administration has brought to the facility.
